No one wants to find out that their house is infested with tiny, brown, blood suckers that are feasting on you and your cat! These fleas can cause you kitty to scratch so much that she can develop sores. If your fleas infestation is particularly bad then you may have itchy red spots from bites as well! And if you are watching closely you may see them hopping on your carpet, bed or pet to pet.

Here is a nasty fact to amaze and horrify your friends: Fleas are awesome jumpers and can make a 33 centimeter leap! That is over 1 foot. If you are challenged by a flea infestation there is no need to worry. They can be eradicated fairly easily.

Fleas have been around for a long time and have been pests of animals and humans for many years. They are actually carriers of some pretty terrible germs as well:

* Fleas are the actual transmitters of bubonic plague. Bubonic plague is caused by “yersinia pestis”, a bacterial that is carried by rats and transferred to humans by their fleas. Over 25 million people have died from the Bubonic Plague since the 14th century.
* Fleas can carry and transmit murine typhus (not deadly but sure can make you ill)
* Fleas are the hosts to tapeworms. If your animal has fleas it needs to be treated for tapeworms.
* Fleas can actually cause allergic reactions in people and pets.

Today there is no excuse for flea infestations to get out of hand here are some tips to controlling the numbers.

* Wash all bedding thoroughly. While the bedding is free of coverings, vacuum the mattress, particularly in the crevices, where eggs might hide.
* Vacuum carpeting daily and dispose of used vacuum bags. I do not recommend placing flea collars in the vacuum bag, as the heat generated by the machine could cause noxious fumes.
* Steam-clean carpeting. This will kill any remaining eggs the vacuum might have missed.
* If necessary, use a whole-house insect bomb which specifically targets fleas. It is critical to remove all food dishes and live animals, including birds during this process. You may consider hiring a professional for this job, but make sure he knows you have cats, and will use a cat-safe product.
* Hire a professional to treat outdoors areas. Insist on a “cat-friendly” product for this purpose. If you have an outdoor cat, keep him confined inside for the day.

House training seems to be a major reason many people hesitate to get a family pet. Cats however rarely need much training. Just buy a litter box, add some cat litter, and oftentimes that’s all that is needed.

Mother cats are great about teaching their kittens how to use a litter box. Your job is simply to make sure your cat knows where the box is located. Once he learns this, it is unlikely he’ll do his business elsewhere. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some decisions for you to make. And the first one is deciding what type of litter you want to use.

If this is your first cat you’ll be a bit shocked when you see all the different types of litter now available. So how do you decide what’s best for you and your pet?

One factor you’ll need to look at is the price. This is where clay litter has a big advantage. Clay was one of the first litters developed commercially and is less expensive than most of the others. The problem with clay is that it not only absorbs liquids, it also hangs on tightly to most odors. You’ll need to change it frequently or the smell will permeate your home. Clay is also problematic if your cat has allergies because when he scratches in the box the dust will start to fly.

Clumping cat litter has replaced basic clay as the litter of choice for most pet owners. As soon as your cat goes, the litter works with the moisture in the waste and forms large clumps. That means all you need to do is scoop out the clumps, there’s no need to change the entire box. Then just put in more litter to replace what you just scooped. Clumping litter also comes with various scents to help hide the smell. So what are the drawbacks? Well some cats will eat the clumped waste. Watch your kitten to make certain this is not a problem.

Silica litters are great at controlling both odor and moisture by using silica crystals mixed with water and sand. Silica is the same substance used in those small packets placed in pill bottles or new shoes. Those packets are there to absorb moisture, and they work just as well in cat litter. You still have to scoop out the solid waste, but the liquid and odors are absorbed by the crystals. Another positive attribute is that this litter is biodegradable. When it decomposes it simply returns to a sandy base. On the down side, it does not clump, so scooping the solid waste can be messy.

Paper litter is also becoming more popular, especially among those concerned with the environment. It is made from recycled paper or pellets. It’s very absorbent, weighs very little, and of course, is also biodegradable.

Another litter that is generally biodegradable is made from wood. Pine is the preferred choice because of it’s natural odor absorbency, but other woods are used as well. All softwood litters are absorbent with natural odor control capabilities. That means no chemicals need to be added, giving you a more natural product.

Once you decide on the type of litter you want to use, your cat will undoubtedly let you know if he agrees with your selection. Some cats for example don’t like the smell of pine litter. Others won’t use silica because the crystals don’t feel good on their paws. In either case, your cat will tell you whether or not he approves by either going or not going in his box.
