How To Kill Cluster Flies

Posted by – May 20

In rural areas, there is a fly that breeds by laying its eggs inside the earthworm. They prefer these homes in the countryside and appear mostly indoors during cooler months. In the spring, they reproduce outside in the ground, and go about their business until late summer. By the time August rolls around and they start moving indoors, you are going to want to know how to get rid of cluster flies.

A cluster fly looks a lot like a regular housefly. He is a little fatter and has golden hair behind his head. He will fly more slowly, and if you swat him then he may leave a grease stain behind. When he’s resting, his wings overlap rather than sticking out a bit. His name derives from his ability to call his friends by smell, which results in a huge insect swarm.

He can squeeze through almost any crack, so the trick is to keep him and his friends outside. This is accomplished by spraying window frames and door frames with an insecticide when you start expecting them to invade. Be sure that all screens are in good shape and that no gaps exist between the screen and the window frame.

If you are too late to prevent an invasion and are now sharing your home with these fat insects, then you have a couple of options. You can go with a fogger, attacking the beasts in whatever room they have chosen to infest.

You can try a bug zapper, electrocuting them with a nice pop and then keeping the bodies in the traps at the base of the zapper. They do require electrical power and maintenance, so they might not be the best choice for every situation.

These bugs live in the spaces between the walls and prefer closed rooms. It’s a good idea to check behind photos, under beds, and in dry corners. For areas like these, a fogger or bug spray works best.

Once you have rid your home of the insects, you want to keep them from being able to come back. Spray the vegetation and grassy areas around your house as well as the house itself since they prefer to return to the same areas. The sunny side of the property should receive special attention since these are the most attractive to them.

Now that you know how to rid your home of cluster flies, you just have to do it. Nobody wants to live with a swarm of insects, and with the right information, nobody needs to.
