Many children desperately want a pet. Sometimes parents will start them off with some fish, or perhaps a little rodent that can easily be kept and cared for in a cage. Having the child take full responsibility for these little animals can be a simple way of getting them familiar with the duties of responsible pet ownership. Cat Care, requires many of the same duties to be performed that are undertaken with smaller animals who are kept in cages.
Cats are notorious for being able to take care of themselves in ways that other domestic animals are not. They are able to hunt for food. They clean themselves regularly and most don’t crave the same kind of physical attention that pets, such as dogs, are known for demanding. However, just because they are capable of hunting for food, does not mean they should be left to fend for themselves and many long hair breeds still need to be brushed to keep the fur from becoming painfully matted.
Cats are pretty easy to litter box train. Most will instinctively go to the litter box on their own. All you have to do is show them where it is and perhaps rub their front in it and they will get the idea. Scratching may become a problem but if you provide your cat with a scratching post, this may be less of a problem. Some posts are made with cat-nip built in to attract them and keep their attention.
Food and water can be provided in bowls that you fill everyday or in automatic feeders and waterer’s. There are a variety of different cat foods you are able to buy from the store. Whatever kind of food you choose to feed, make sure the first ingredient is meat if you want the very best nutrition for your kitty.
You don’t have to go overboard buying toys and other entertainment materials. A box with holes cut in it can keep most cats happy for hours. A ball of tinfoil can also provide a great deal of action and fun to be had.
Along with food, water and playtime, cleaning out the litter box is something else that has to be done. Scooping it out daily is best and changing it completely every week is preferred to keep your kitty happy and healthy. No matter what your age, or the age of the child responsible for providing care, building a lasting friendship with your furry feline friend will probably come quite naturally.
